JR Engineering Employee Provides Assistance to Uganda Community, March 2007

Under the aegis of Engineering Ministries International, JR employee Jolene Hurt joined a team of nine design professionals in the bush of Uganda for a week and a half earlier this year. While there, they designed a secondary school campus--complete with classrooms and dormitories. The school, when built, will hold 1000 students and close to 150 staff/teachers. She helped the survey team collect data from 20 acres of land, as well as designed the wastewater system for the school. She also visited 10 orphan homes and distributed a lot of the gifts that the people from JR had sent with her. The kids absolutely loved the gifts.

Engineering Ministries International sponsors project trips every two to three months to areas needing volunteer assistance. Jolene's group included volunteers from Indiana, Illinois, the United Kingdom, Uganda, and Kenya (the group's surveyor is orginally from Alaska).

Check out the website for Engineering Ministries International - East Africa, where you'll pick up tips on how to dress (especially if you're female), decline marriage offers (despite a dowry of a dozen cows--again if you're female; Jolene has turned down at least six over the years but felt that there were never enough cows and goats to make the offer appealing), and how to escape charging rhinos--among much other useful and entertaining information.

Jolene’s involvement is another great example of dedication that JR Engineering employees demonstrate in supporting community efforts and causes. This level of commitment is to be applauded.
