FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) “Engineering & Construction Camps - 2006”

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) came to town the week of July 10 th , for its annual Engineering & Construction Camp. “High school students from across the country learn engineering solutions and skills from real engineers while getting a taste of what it means to work for and with military services”—SAME website. JR Engineering invited one of the six flights to visit JR for an afternoon. A flight consists of 10 students, ranging from sophomore to senior, with one cadet commander and two mentors. JR's group came from all parts of the country—in fact, from the world (one was from Germany ).
Following an overview of JR, regarding whom we are and what we do, managers explained the professional engineering licensing process. Another discussion was led on hydraulic channel design and erosion controls which showed the participants how to perform a quick calculation typically used in a storm water management design project. The group then visited the Cottonwood Creek channel project site and compared the design to its execution. The Springs area had experienced heavy rains recently, so the project has seen a lot of activity. The students noticed how the rip-rap had been placed; sedimentation that had formed in the stilling basin—and took note of several four-foot boulders that had been pushed downstream by the force of the water. A discussion regarding the force of the water and construction techniques followed.

It was very encouraging to see so many bright and motivated young minds considering an engineering career. This was JR's third year of participation in the SAME camp.
